Our Story

A True Family Affair

Dr. Clarence Dee (Papa), patriarch of the Dee family, came to South Florida after graduating from Iowa State University. Once in Florida Clarence practiced large and small animal medicine with Dr Yarborough of Miami. Clarence and his brother-in-law Dr. Frederickson opened Hollywood Animal Hospital in 1947. Clarence was one of the earliest veterinary practitioners in the state and for many years sat on the Veterinary Board of Examiners where he administered the State Board Examination for all incoming doctors. He was appointed by both democratic and republican governors for several successive terms.

Three of Clarence’s sons, Jon, Larry, and James became veterinarians, all graduating from Auburn University in 1966, 1969 and 1972, respectively.

Dr. Jon Dee continued his education with a master’s degree and became a Diplomate of the American College of Surgeons. Jon is well known for his surgical expertise, his lectures as well as his publications. He continues to be employed at the VCA Hollywood Animal Hospital and is known as a par excellent fly fisherman.

Dr. Larry Dee, after practicing for seven years with Dr Bill Jackson of Lakeland Larry joined the family at Hollywood. Larry became a member of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners and served as president. He later became president of the American Animal Hospital Association as well as the World Small Animal Veterinary Association.

Dr. James Dee (Dad), after graduating joined the family at Hollywood Animal Hospital and served on the admissions committee for the University of Florida School of Veterinary Medicine. He was President of the Broward County Veterinary Association and served as managing partner of Hollywood Animal Hospital.  James was a founding member of Veterinary Management Group One as well as secretary of Veterinary Study Groups.

James’s son, Scott, grew up working in the family practice cleaning cages and doing other odd jobs as most veterinarians’ kids do. He chose to enter the profession on the side of industry working at Webster Veterinary Supply and Merial Animal Health. He then started Dee Veterinary Products in 2005.

Since then, we have tried to maintain our family roots. First by hiring Scott’s brother-in-law John Schaefer. Afterwards any new additions have been with the mindset that this is a family that has been chosen. This attitude has resulted in people that truly want to excel at their jobs. Their desire to improve at every level is inspirational and a benefit to our customers’ experience. We look forward to serving the profession for a long time to come. Thank you for your trust.
